"I am ecstatic that HANO is supporting the center’s goal of securing long-term resources, and I will fully support their efforts"
Year-long battle to secure funding pays off with HANO providing $100,000
New Orleans, LA - June 16, 2010 - Council President Arnie Fielkow announced the Community Center at the Iberville Public Housing Development will remain open thanks to $100,000 provided by the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO).
"I wish to thank private individuals who provided the funding which kept the Center open until this arrangement was worked out with HANO," said President Fielkow. "The funds will allow the center to not only remain open but also to build a system of resources that will support the center in the long-term."
Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana provided $130,000 over a 20-month period between 2008-2009 to cover Center operations, including salaries, thanks to funding from the Office of Justice Programs/Boys and Girls Clubs of America. HANO had provided rent-free space.
But, the center found itself closed in November, 2009 when funding from the Boys and Girls Club was exhausted. The underfunded center was closed approximately two weeks before money from the Greater New Orleans Afterschool Partnership, Council President Arnie Fielkow, HANO, the law firm Gertler, Gertler, Vincent & Plotkin, as well as anonymous donors provided band-aid funding.
"HANO's announcement will provide stability for one-year, while allowing a unit board, who will be charged with organizing and building long-term resources, to form," said Councilmember Fielkow. "I am ecstatic that HANO is supporting the center's goal of securing long-term resources, and I will fully support their efforts. Our children deserve no less."
